Family and housing benefits in France
The Caisse d’Allocations Familiales (CAF) is part of the French Social Security system. Registering with the CAF is essential as it is the institution that distributes family and housing benefits and allowances, and more.
Family benefits
If you are expecting a baby or already have children, you must declare this to the CAF. Depending on your household income, you are entitled to family benefits. This will get you a certain amount of allowance every month. If you use childcare services, the CAF will also contribute to paying your nanny or nursery. If you have decided to stay at home to take care of your young children, then again you can apply for a monthly allowance. These are just the main allowances the CAF offers, there are more depending on your specific situation. Take a look at all these family benefits here.
Housing benefits
The most current housing benefit is the “Aide Personnelle au Logement” (APL) : Personal Housing Benefit. This benefit helps pay your rent or your house mortgage. Your eligibility and its amount will be subject to your household income.
There are other housing benefits, such as “Prime de déménagement” (Moving allowance) for families moving to a bigger home because they are growing or the “Prêt à l’amélioration de l’habitat” (Home Improvement Loan) for owners or tenants who’d like to improve their home. Have look at the CAF’s website for more information about housing benefits.
The CAF also offers a range of benefits for people with disabilities, for people working on a low income, unemployment benefits, etc.
