Visas - Private Health Insurance
When applying for a French visa, one of the key requirements is proof of private healthcare insurance. This ensures that visitors and students are protected against medical expenses during their stay in France, while also guaranteeing that the French healthcare system is not financially burdened.

Who needs Private Health Insurance ?
If you are planning to relocate to France with a student visa or a visitor visa (visiting or retiring to France), then Private Health Insurance will be mandatory for your visa application.
For UK retirees that are entitled to an S1 and working visa applicants, private health insurance is not mandatory for the visa application. Yet, getting into the French healthcare system can take a while and you may want to opt for Private Health Insurance to be on the safe side.
Basically, if you need Private Health Insurance, it will be indicated on the checklist of your visa application, done on France Visa.
What Criteria Must the Insurance Meet to Be Approved?
The French consulate is very strict when it comes to insurance requirements. Your policy must:
- Cover at least €30,000 in medical expenses.
- Include emergency medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation.
- Be valid for the entire Schengen area (not just France).
- Remain valid for the entire duration of your stay.
- Be issued by a recognized international insurance provider.
If your Private Health Insurance doesn’t meet these criteria, your visa application may be delayed or even rejected.
The insurance must start on the first day you wish your visa to begin and last for the length of the visa (up to one year max).
Private Healthcare partners
To help applicants meet the French visa requirements, I work and am affiliated with trusted international insurers that provide:
- Schengen-compliant policies approved by French embassies and consulates.
- Quick issuance of insurance certificates required for visa files.
- Affordable options for students, workers, and long-term residents.
- Flexible coverage that extends beyond France to the wider Schengen zone.
I always recommend to get at least 2 or 3 quotes before making a decision.
Please note these are 3 companies I work with on a regular basis but there are many more PHI providers out there!
